Home/Shop/Travelan vs a probiotic
Two different things

Is Travelan the same as a probiotic? No. Here is what each one actually is

People search "travelan probiotic" and "travelan alternative" and arrive here. We sell a probiotic, so read this knowing that. What follows is a description of two different categories, using each maker's own published wording, with no ranking and no comparison of what either one does.

Checked 12 September 2026. Every figure on this page carries its source and the date we read it.

The short answer

Travelan is a bovine colostrum product listed in Australia with its own indications. A probiotic, including Wander Gut, is a product of live micro-organisms. They are not the same category and one is not a version of the other.

That is the whole of what this page can honestly tell you about how they relate. Travelan's maker describes what it is and what it is listed for on its own website, and we quote that below rather than paraphrase it. Wander Gut's label describes what it is, and we quote that too.

What we will not do is put the two side by side on what they achieve. We sell one of them, and Australian rules on advertising therapeutic goods are clear that a comparison implying one does what the other is listed for is a claim we are not entitled to make.

What Travelan is, in its maker's words

Travelan's FAQ page answers the regulatory-status question directly. This is the wording on that page on the day we read it, and the link goes to the page itself:

In Australia Travelan® is listed in the ARTG, AUST L 106709. Its indications are: Reduces the risk of Travellers' Diarrhoea; Reduces the risk of minor gastro-intestinal disorders; Antimicrobial.

Travelan FAQ, "What is the regulatory status of Travelan?", read 12 September 2026

On what it is made of, the same page says:

The ingredient

Travelan® contains the natural ingredient bovine colostrum powder, harvested from dairy cows, and that are subject to a proprietary immunisation regime with proprietary vaccines to produce high levels of antibodies against specific… E. coli and the toxins they produce.

Travelan FAQ, "What is the main ingredient of Travelan?" (ellipsis ours, for length), read 12 September 2026

Its "how it works" page lists 200 mg of hyperimmunised dairy (bovine) colostrum powder per caplet, and the FAQ notes it contains milk protein and lactose and has been sold over the counter in Australian pharmacies since 2006. So, in plain terms: Travelan is a dairy-derived product made from the colostrum of cows that have been vaccinated so their colostrum carries particular antibodies. It is not a culture of live organisms.

The AUST L number and the three indications above are the regulator's record of what the product may be advertised for in Australia. If you want to check them, the TGA's public register is searchable by that number.

What a probiotic is

A probiotic is a product whose active content is live micro-organisms, usually bacteria and sometimes a yeast, counted in colony-forming units (CFU). The label names the organisms by genus and species and gives a count. That is the category Wander Gut belongs to. Its panel, reproduced from the shop page:

Probiotic Blend (5 Strains)60 Billion CFU
Saccharomyces boulardii10 Billion CFU
Lactobacillus acidophilus15 Billion CFU
Lactobacillus rhamnosus15 Billion CFU
Lactobacillus plantarum10 Billion CFU
Bifidobacterium lactis10 Billion CFU
Prebiotic Inulin FOS250 mg

Does Wander Gut prevent Bali belly? No. No supplement can guarantee prevention of traveller's diarrhoea or travel-related stomach upset. Wander Gut is designed to support digestive balance as part of a sensible travel routine.

Wander Gut FAQ, read 12 September 2026

What Wander Gut is for, in the words used across this site, is daily gut support for new foods, long flights and changing routines, as part of a sensible travel routine. The directions say to start around 5-7 days before you go and keep taking it daily while you are away.

Here is the part that matters for anyone comparing the two. Travelan's listing carries the indications quoted above. Wander Gut does not make that claim, and our FAQ says so in one word:

How people use each one

The two products are taken differently and for different stated reasons, which is the clearest sign they are different things. Travelan's own site describes it as a product to take with meals while travelling, in the context of its listed indications. A probiotic is taken as a daily routine, started before the trip, on the reasoning that a habit needs to exist before travel makes it hard to keep.

Whether a person uses one, the other, both or neither is a question for them and, if they are on medication, pregnant, or managing a condition, for their pharmacist or GP. We do not advise on combining products, ours or anyone else's, and neither should a website.

"Is Gastro-Stop the same as Travelan?"

That question appears in the same searches, so briefly: no. Gastro-Stop is an over-the-counter medicine taken after symptoms start, which is a third category again. It is not a colostrum product and not a probiotic. Its label and a pharmacist are the right sources for what it is and when it is used; we have not reproduced its wording here because we have not verified it on the day.

Where we stand, and what we are not saying

We sell Wander Gut, so you should weigh this page accordingly. We have quoted Travelan's own words because they are theirs to make and the regulator's to record, and we have quoted our own label for the same reason. We have not scored anything, ranked anything, or hosted anybody's reviews of either product.

Every quote on this page was read on 12 September 2026 and is linked to its source. We re-check them quarterly; if you find one has changed, tell us and we will fix it the same week.

Travelan® is a registered trade mark of its owner. Its use here is to identify the product being described.

Questions people ask

Is Travelan the same as a probiotic?
No. Travelan is a bovine colostrum product; a probiotic is live micro-organisms. Different categories, different labels, different listings.
Is Travelan just colostrum?
Its maker describes the ingredient as bovine colostrum powder from cows vaccinated under the maker's own regime so the colostrum carries particular antibodies, at 200 mg per caplet, with milk protein and lactose present. The full wording is quoted above with a link.
Is Wander Gut an alternative to Travelan?
We would not describe it that way and we are not permitted to. Travelan is listed in Australia with specific indications, quoted above. Wander Gut is a probiotic taken as a daily routine, and it does not make that claim.
Can I take a probiotic and Travelan together?
That is a question for a pharmacist or GP, especially if you take medication, are pregnant or manage a condition. We do not advise on combining products.
Is Gastro-Stop the same as Travelan?
No. Gastro-Stop is an over-the-counter medicine taken after symptoms begin, a different category from both a colostrum product and a probiotic. Its label and a pharmacist are the right sources.
Where is Travelan sold?
Its FAQ says it has been sold over the counter in Australian pharmacies since 2006. Its website has a where-to-buy page.
Where is Wander Gut sold?
Direct from this site only, shipped from Australia in 3-5 business days, free on two bottles or more.

Left out on purpose because we could not verify it from a primary source: Travelan's marketing figures about its effect, which are its claims to make on its own pages, not ours to repeat; Gastro-Stop's active ingredient and label wording, not verified on the day.
