What Inner Health Travel Bug is

Inner Health is a Metagenics brand, and Travel Bug is its travel product. The register records it as a listed medicine, ARTG entry 477446, with Metagenics (Aust) Pty Ltd as sponsor.

The single active is Saccharomyces cerevisiae (boulardii) at 5 billion CFU per hard capsule. That organism is a yeast rather than a bacterium, which is worth knowing because a lot of people assume every probiotic is bacterial. The other ingredients recorded on the register are disodium edetate, gellan gum, hypromellose, potable water and potassium acetate.

Metagenics describes the product as vegetarian and vegan friendly, made in Australia, and free from gluten, wheat, dairy, lactose, corn, cereals, eggs, nuts, starches, artificial colours, flavours and preservatives.

What it is permitted to say, and what we are not

This is the part that matters more than any number. A listed medicine on the ARTG carries permitted indications, which are the specific claims the sponsor has selected and is allowed to make. Travel Bug's, word for word from the register:

Decrease/reduce/relieve diarrhoea in children. Decrease/reduce/relieve diarrhoea in healthy infants. Decrease/reduce/relieve diarrhoea. Helps reduce occurrence of diarrhoea. Helps reduce occurrence of symptoms of traveller's diarrhoea.

That wording belongs to that product and its listing. Wander Gut does not carry those indications and does not make those claims anywhere on this site. What we say about our own product is that it is a daily probiotic for supporting healthy digestive function while your gut adjusts to new food, different water and a changed routine.

If the wording above is what you are shopping for, then the honest answer is that the product holding it is the one to look at, and we would rather tell you that than blur the difference. Anyone comparing this category should read both labels and notice which claims each one is actually permitted to make.

Always read the label and follow the directions for use. The register entry also requires a statement about seeking medical advice if diarrhoea persists, with thresholds by age.

How it is taken

Metagenics gives a travel dose and a separate dose for relief. The travel one:

For 5 days prior & every day whilst travelling, take 1 capsule daily.

For relief in adults the stated dose is two capsules twice daily, and for children from three months to twelve years, one capsule twice daily or as directed by a healthcare professional. Metagenics notes that infants unable to swallow a capsule can have the contents dissolved in water, breast milk or formula.

For comparison, and purely as a label fact: Wander Gut is two capsules daily, preferably with water, from around five to seven days before you go and every day while you are away. Same idea about starting before departure, different arithmetic.

Store below 25 degrees C. No Refrigeration Required.

Neither product needs a fridge, which for a Bali trip is the practical point. A bottle that needs refrigeration is a bottle you cannot take on a scooter to Uluwatu.

A larger CFU number is not a promise of anything and we are not presenting it as one. The strains, the dose and the claims a product is permitted to make are all different questions, and the label is where each of them is answered.

How to actually decide

• Read which claims each product is permitted to make. Search the ARTG by product name. It is a public register and it takes a minute.
• Check the strain names, not just the word probiotic. A named strain tells you what you are taking; a vague blend does not.
• Match the pack to the trip. 20 capsules at one a day is about three weeks. 60 capsules at two a day is 30 serves. Work out the length of your routine and count backwards.
• Check the storage line. Anything needing refrigeration is awkward on a Bali itinerary.
• Check who it is for. Age ranges differ between products, and so do the warnings.
• Ask a pharmacist if you take medication, are pregnant or nursing, are giving it to a young child, or manage a medical condition. That applies to every product in this category including ours.
