The short answer
A first trip to Bali works best as a split: a few nights on the coast (Seminyak or Canggu), then a few in Ubud, with Uluwatu, Nusa Penida or the quiet east added as the trip gets longer. One big outing a day, mornings for sights, afternoons for pools. The builder lays that out for your length and style.
The shapes come from the guide's where-to-base-yourself chapter (split the stay; one hotel for a week is the common regret), the outings from its bucket list, hidden gems and eat-these lists, and the pacing from its rhythm tip. Five styles cover most trips: first trip, surf, temples and terraces, family with young kids, and quiet.
What the builder does not do is pretend to know what it cannot: no ticket prices, no opening hours, no hotel names, and the only money figures are the guide's dated ride and driver ballparks. Check the day before you go, book the kecak seats, and leave real time for traffic.
The shape of a good Bali trip
A good first-timer shape: split the stay, a few nights coastal (Canggu/Seminyak/Uluwatu) + a few nights Ubud or the east. One hotel for a whole week is the most common first-trip regret.
Bali is a dozen holidays wearing one name, and the base you pick decides which one you get. Splitting the stay means you get two. The builder's first-trip shapes all start on the coast, because a soft landing near the airport after a red-eye is the guide's advice and because the coast is where the sunset is, then move up to Ubud for the terraces, the temples and the biggest day-trip range on the island.
Pace is the other half. The guide's rhythm tip is printed under every plan for a reason: the over-scheduled trip is the one people come home from tired.
Rhythm tip: one big outing per day, mornings for sights, afternoons for pools and massages. Bali punishes the over-scheduled.
7 days in Bali: the first-trip plan, explained
Three nights on the coast, three in Ubud. The coast days are the sunset temple at Uluwatu with the kecak dance (book the seats, guard your sunglasses), Tanah Lot at golden hour, and a fish grill on the sand at Jimbaran. The Ubud days are Tegallalang early or Jatiluwih for twice the scale and half the people, Tirta Empul with a sarong and a licensed guide if you want the pools, and the 2am start for sunrise on Mount Batur with a registered local guide, followed by an afternoon of nothing.
That is six outings in seven days with two of them gentle, which is about the limit. Add a surf lesson at Kuta beach or the Campuhan Ridge Walk at dawn if the mornings feel empty; they will not.
10 and 14 days: add the Bukit, the islands or the east
Ten days lets the first-trip plan add three nights on the Bukit: Bingin's cliff stairs, Single Fin's Sunday sunset session, and the best surf on the island. Fourteen days adds Nusa Penida too, overnight rather than as a day trip, because the day boats all arrive and leave at the same hours and the island is a different place at dawn. Kelingking, Angel's Billabong and Crystal Bay are the long day; the snorkel is the morning after.
The temples-and-terraces style goes the other way at ten days: Ubud longest, then the east (Lempuyang's gates of heaven with its long queue, Tirta Gangga, Amed's shipwreck snorkel straight off the beach), then the misty north loop of Handara Gate, the twin lakes and Sekumpul, Bali's biggest falls, with the mandatory local guide from the official entrance. The quiet style is Sidemen, Amed and Munduk with almost nothing scheduled, which is the point.
5 days: one split or one base
Five days is four nights, and the builder splits them two and two for a first trip: a coastal sunset and a temple, then Ubud's terraces and a water temple. Surfers get four nights on the Bukit, families get four in Sanur, the quiet version is two in Ubud and two in Sidemen. Moving more than once in four nights is a packing exercise; the builder never does it.
Families, surfers and the quiet version
Family with young kids
Sanur or a Seminyak resort, the guide's easy answers with a pram, and Ubud only once the trip is long enough and the kids are old enough for a waterfall. The beachfront path, the reef-sheltered beach, the pool.
Surf
The Bukit first and longest: Bingin, Uluwatu, Single Fin. Then Canggu's breaks, and Nusa Penida when there is time. Wheels are part of the deal, with the motorcycle licence and IDP, or a driver.
Quiet
Ubud, Sidemen, Amed and Munduk. Volcano views, waterfalls, rice valleys and black-sand diving, with one outing every second day and the rest left empty.
Every style ends with the same last day: a slow morning, then real time for the airport road, because the coast road and the airport approach are the slowest on the island.
What the builder will not tell you
- Prices and opening hours. None we could source, so none printed. The ride and driver ballparks are the guide's, July 2026, and say so.
- Hotels. Base areas only. The where-to-stay quiz and the comparison page get you to the right area; the hotel is yours.
- Whether you can ride a scooter. Legally you need a motorcycle licence at home plus an International Driving Permit in the motorcycle class; without them most insurance will not cover a crash. The getting-around page is blunt about it.
- Boat safety. Smartraveller's line on Indonesian boats is that operators may not comply with international safety standards and there may not be enough life jackets; a fast boat to Nusa Penida capsized in Sanur Harbour in August 2025. Use the safety gear and check the boat.
- The weather on your dates. The best-time page has the month-by-month numbers; the wet season changes what an outing day looks like.
